
Leah Thorn
Leah Thorn is a spoken word poet, who works in collaboration with film-makers, dancers and musicians. At the heart of her poetry is the autobiographical exploration of identity and of issues of liberation. She is published through performance, film and anthologies and magazines in England and the United States.
As an artist/activist, Leah also lead poetry-as-empowerment workshops. These workshops are rooted in her writing and performance practice, in a background of psychology and peer counselling and in forty years experience of feminism. She has an MA in Creative Writing & Personal Development from Sussex University Leah is a former writer-in-residence at HMP Bronzefield and as a result compiled and edited, an anthology of poetry and testimony by, and for, women in prison who self harm. Leah facilitates workshops across the prison estate nationally for the Anne Frank Trust and Women In Prison. In 2012 she undertook a Winston Churchill Travel Fellowship, visiting women’s correctional facilities across the United States with dance and theatre companies and in 2013 she received a Royal Society for Public Health Special Commendation Award for her contribution to Creative Arts and the Criminal Justice System.
