Celebration Arch is transferred to Dover Discovery Centre

Schools and arts award

The DAD Celebration Arch commissioned by The World Famous for ‘Song for Dover’ – Olympic Torch Evening Celebration, in partnership with Dover District Council and Kent County Council, funded by Arts Council England has found a new home in the library area of the Dover Discovery Centre. The Arch had to be restored and reworked, in part because several of the original pom poms, including the very appealing large white one with rings in the Olympic ring colours, and the knitted athletes by Julie Bishop were taken from the arch, no doubt as momentos, as it hung above the Bench street underpass, the main point of access from the town to the celebrations on the seafront on July 18th. A  plaited border and additional elements have since been crafted by Zhanlu Smith and the original arch now has a second life as a colourful wall hanging. Many of the Dover schoolchildren who made pom poms will now be able to spot theirs when they visit the Library.
