Great turnout for Matthias Koch’s photos of Dover

War & Peace

On 3 July 2013, Matthias Koch presented his photographs of Dover to a spellbound audience of 50 people in the cafe area of Dover Discovery Centre, at a special preview particularly aimed at those with an interest in photography. All the behind the scenes work to transform the space into a pop-up, blacked-out screening room paid off and there was a real engagement with Matthias’s warm and humorous talk, and time for questions and conversation. We also gained an insight into his working methods and conceptual approach. Matthias talked about what he had learnt as a student of Bernd Becher, about how the dangers of being perched at the top of his fire-truck ladder pushed him to invent a different way of getting the camera to the height he wanted and he also talked about his interest in the “magic moment” – the particularity of time and place which imbues his work.
