Public consultation: New cover for the Fountain

Have your say on the new Fountain cover.
Each year the fountain on Dover’s Market Square, is switched off and covered from October until April and it will stay switched off and covered for the whole of 2012 while the Locog Big Screen covers everything around the Olympics.

The existing cover needs to be replaced.

Rather than just build another box, Dover Arts Development (DAD) in cooperation with Kent County Council (KCC) Arts Development Unit, Dover District Council (DDC) and UCA Canterbury School of Architecture organised a competition for postgraduate students. The students were asked to design a new cover for the fountain that is robust, durable and safe as well as easy to maintain. The cover also needs to facilitate the viewing of events on the Big Screen.

5 designs have been shortlisted to go to public consultation and residents are invited to comment. The designs will be on display in the Curve at the Library in Dover Discovery Centre from 21 November 2011 to 5 December 2011 during normal opening hours.

The best design will be selected in January 2012 and the new cover will be ready in April 2012. The Fountain was designed and built by Dover District Council in 1988 and was given a complete service earlier this year.
